Hormonal Therapy

Hormones are chemical messengers that help your body complete essential functions, including promoting tissue growth, controlling body temperature, managing mood, and much more. When an individual is diagnosed with cancer, his or her hormones might become damaged and begin to help cancer spread throughout the affected area.

In addition to other treatment options, your oncologist might suggest hormonal therapy to help minimize or prevent further cancer growth. Hormonal therapy is designed to hinder cancerous cells from communicating with hormones that would be used to spread cancer. This form of treatment is often completed by taking additional medication prescribed by your physician; however, in extreme cases, your oncologist might recommend surgically removing the gland that produces the hormone the cancer is trying to contact.
